Several Members of the LBVA, led by Michael Drake, went before the Town Commissioners to ask for a change in the Town's Peacock Ordinance to request a no feeding clause. Additionally, money was requested to further reduce the flock. LBVA had proceeded to partially reduced then numbers at our own expense. There was a single Village resident that spoke of the history of the peacocks in the Village, and spoke of the joy that feeding them provided for her. The result of this appearance before the Commissioners was that the issue was referred to workshop.
To summarize the result of the Workshop on this
issues, the Town Commission agreed to remove 80% of the peacock population. The
Town having agreed in 1978 to keep the number of peacocks at 12, and recognized
that this would need to be an annual expense. The Town lawyer was requested to
re-draft the Ordinance to include a no feeding provision, number restriction,
and annual maintenance.
The result of the workshop was reported in the April 18, 2008 issue of the Longboat Key News, and can be
